You did it!

Thank you for signing up to participate in the American Exchange Project.

Here’s what to expect over the next few months.

NOTE: In order to travel, you must attend several meetings throughout the year organized by your Exchange Manager. If you miss a meeting and don’t arrange a makeup, you may not be allowed to participate in the American Exchange Project.

If you still have questions after reading the below information, please reach out to your Hometown Exchange Manager.

5 Things You Need to Know

  • This trip is FREE

The American Exchange Project covers your transportation, lodging, meals, and group activities. You’re only responsible for additional expenses, such as checked luggage, extra treats, and souvenirs you choose to purchase. There are no hidden costs or fees.

  • Get informed

Attend a national or local info session (if you haven’t already)—that’s where an American Exchange Project representative will answer any questions you or your parents might have. Register for the next national info session at this link, or check with your Hometown Exchange Manager to find out about upcoming local info sessions.

  • Secure your TSA-approved ID

This is a big one! If you’ll be 18 or older when it’s time to travel, you’ll need a TSA-approved identification card or you may not be allowed to board the plane. You can check the guidelines for approved forms of identification here: TSA-Approved ID. The REAL ID requirement will go into effect May 7, 2025, which means your ID will need to be REAL-ID compliant in order for you to board a domestic flight. If you wait until May or June to start the paperwork, it’s unlikely that you will receive your ID card in time to travel.

Talk to your parent/guardian or your Exchange Manager now to start figuring out what you’ll need to travel.

  • Plan your Hometown Week

Signing up for the American Exchange Project means that you will participate in a two-week domestic exchange experience. Talk to your Exchange Manager to help plan your Hometown Week itinerary. This is your chance to provide input on what you think visiting students have got to experience in your town, whether that’s a cool arcade or a rodeo.

  • Host a student to get the full American Exchange Project experience

If your family is able to host a student during your Hometown Week, we hope that you sign up to do so! It’s not required to host a student in order to travel, but it’s encouraged. If your parent/guardian isn’t sure about hosting a student, encourage them to talk to your Hometown Exchange Manager or sign up for the next National Town Hall. Complete the interest form now.
